Infertility & My Espresso Machine

I went through fertility treatment almost 10 years ago, and we didn’t go very far before choosing adoption. I’m sure (well I hope!) that many advances in treatment options have been made since then, but I think the one high-tech-y test I did have is still around: the hysterosalpingogram (HSG).

I remember the big, dark, scary room and how my doctor and the technician chatted about their adorable children while they ran the test. Sensitivity training, anyone?

The result of my test was mild preferential flow – in other words, nothing that could explain for certain why I wasn’t getting pregnant.

Now I’m sure you’re wondering what in the world this has to do with making coffee. Here it is: our espresso machine is temperamental in many, many ways (a true Italian diva) and one of them is that the coffee comes out of one side of the group head much more quickly than the other.

And believe it or not, after almost 10 years (seven of them spent parenting Vintage Girl), I still hear those words “preferential flow” in my head every time I make my morning latte.

PS I can’t make any of those fancy patterns with the milk foam!

    LOL, thank you. Now when my Italian Diva acts up and the espresso comes out faster on one side than the other, I have a term for it: preferential flow.

    I managed a very sad swirl in our crema the other day, but the Lion was not impressed that I stuck my finger in his coffee to do it. *smile*

    Seriously, they were chatting about their kids? Lovely!

    Hi Ann: I guess there are some things in life that just can’t be explained. Although sometimes it’s easier to accept things when there is an explanation.

    Hi Ann – I was wondering how you were going to tie the two subjects together, but you did. Perfectly.

    @Panther: do you have a diva too? I’ve never thought of using my finger to make the nice patterns – I could probably get Vintage Girl to do that job!

    @Meg: you are most welcome!

    @Marelisa: I wasn’t really bothered that the test was inconclusive, but I am surprised that I still remember it almost every day.

    @Barbara: Thank you!
